DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z December 16, 2022


SMOKE/AEROSOLS:
Southern Texas/Florida/Atlantic Ocean/Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Gulf of
Mexico/Pacific Ocean South of Mexico...
A sizable area of thin density smoke and from scattered seasonal fire
activity in Mexico mixed with aerosols originating from gas flaring
activity in Bay of Campeche and urban/industrial activity in Mexico
continues to be analyzed over the Western and northeastern Gulf of Mexico
along with the eastern coast of Mexico. The thin smoke and aerosols
seemed to also have extended across the Gulf of Mexico, through Florida
and into the Atlantic ocean southeast of the U.S due to the weather
funneling the smoke. Another area of smoke or smoke/aerosol mixes were
observed off the southwestern coast of Mexico into the Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
