DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0043Z March 5, 2023

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Southeastern United States, Atlantic Ocean off the Southeast United States
Coast, Gulf of Mexico, Western Caribbean Islands, Western Caribbean Sea,
Southern and Eastern Mexico, Northwestern Central America and the Pacific
Ocean South of Mexico and Central America…
The enormous area of smoke from seasonal fire activity occurring
in Mexico, Central America, Cuba and the southeastern United States
along with aerosols from industrial activity mainly in Mexico, Central
America and Cuba, with probable contributions from recent heavy blowing
dust continued to be visible throughout the day generally impacting
the same regions affected in recent days. The smoke and aerosol mix
covered a portion of the south central and southeastern United States.
The mix also was present over the Atlantic well off the southeastern
United States, the Gulf of Mexico, the western Caribbean Sea islands,
western Caribbean Sea, southern and eastern Mexico, Central America,
and the Pacific Ocean well south of the southern coast of Mexico and
Central America. Areas of moderately dense smoke can be seen along the
eastern coastline of Mexico stretching north and then east across the
Gulf of Mexico, parts of southern Texas, Southeastern U.S., Hispaniola,
Jamaica and most of Cuba.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED

TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
