DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1520Z March 26, 2023

SMOKE:
Midwest and Central United States...
An area of thin density smoke, from fire activity over the Central United
States, was seen extending from portions of western Pennsylvania west
and southwest through the Midwestern United States and into the Central
United States of northern Arkansas and northern Oklahoma.

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Atlantic Ocean off the Southeast United States Coast, Southeastern
United States, Coastal Locations along the Gulf Coast, Gulf of Mexico,
Western Caribbean Islands, Southern and Eastern Mexico, Northwestern
Central America and the Pacific Ocean south and southwest of Southwest
Mexico and Northwestern Central America...
A mixture of thin density smoke from seasonal fire activity over the
Southeastern United States and also from seasonal fire activity and
aerosols from industrial activity both originating from portions of
Mexico and Central America was seen today over the Atlantic Ocean off the
Southeast United States coast, coastal locations along the Gulf Coast,
Gulf of Mexico, western Caribbean Islands, eastern and southern Mexico,
northwestern Central America to the Pacific Ocean south and southwest
of southwest Mexico and northwestern Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
