DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z July 3, 2023

SMOKE:
Canada/U.S./Atlantic…
Wildfire activity persists across Canada, continuing to feed an expansive
area of varying density smoke that blankets an area covering nearly all
of Canada, the eastern 3/5 of the CONUS, much of the North Atlantic,
and parts of Greenland. Light smoke from a combination of wildfire and
agricultural fire sources across Mexico and Central America, perhaps with
some minor amounts of industrially produced aerosol included, was also
observed across much of Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico and extending out
into the tropical Pacific. The smoke from this activity was merging with
the Canadian wildfire smoke across the southeastern CONUS. The thickest
smoke continues to be produced by wildfire activity in eastern Canada,
residing across central Quebec with some intrusion across the Newfoundland
border. Another area of thick smoke was remnant and residing over far
northern Ontario extending out over Hudson By. This thick smoke was very
likely produced from a wildfire in northwestern Ontario, from which it
moved north-northeastward overnight.

DUST:
Tropical Atlantic/Northern Caribbean/Bahamas…
Saharan Dust was observed extending across the Atlantic and northern
Caribbean south of about 25N. The dust was seen over the Greater Antilles
into the Bahamas and perhaps even over or just off the Atlantic side
of Florida.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
