DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0011Z July 12, 2023

SMOKE:
Canada, United States, Northern Mexico, Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific
Ocean...
Wildfire activity continues across Canada, from the Yukon to Quebec. The
highest density smoke was seen extending from British Columbia and the
Yukon east and southeast into the Northwest Territories and Alberta.
Further to the southeast, an area of moderate density smoke extended
from Saskatchewan and Manitoba southeast into the Northern Plains and
Upper Midwest of the United States. An area of moderate density smoke,
associated with the fire activity over Quebec, was extending northeast
into portions of northern Quebec. The area of lighter density smoke
extended across all of the North Atlantic Ocean and was seen as far
east as portions of western Europe. Smoke also spread across the Gulf of
Mexico, eastern/southern Mexico and portions of the central and eastern
North Atlantic, Saharan Dust may also be present with smoke over those
locations.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
