DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 30, 2023

SMOKE:
Canada/US Great Plains and Western Gulf of Mexico/Northeast Pacific
Ocean/Northwest Atlantic Ocean...
Smoke from wildfire activity across wide portions of western Canada
covered much of Canada from Hudson Bay westward, extending southward
over much of the US Great Plains and Mississippi River Valley and over
the western Gulf of Mexico and adjacent coastal Mexico. Within this,
a large area of moderate and dense smoke was observed over central
Canada extending southward over portions of the Great Plains as far as
Oklahoma. Additional areas of light remnant smoke were observed over
the Pacific Ocean west and southwest of British Columbia, as well as
the northwestern Atlantic east of Newfoundland.

California/Oregon…
Wildfires in northwestern California and western Oregon were observed
producing light to moderate smoke extending over coastal California and
the adjacent Pacific Ocean as far south as Santa Barbara. An additional
fire east of Eugene, Oregon, was observed producing light smoke extending
eastward to the southeastern corner of the state.

DUST:
Eastern/central Atlantic…
A layer of Saharan dust was observed stretching from near and north of
the Cape Verde Islands to about 50W. Additional dust was also seen over
the western Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean north of Puerto Rico
and Hispaniola.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
