DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z September 8, 2023

SMOKE:
Canada/U.S./Atlantic Ocean off the U.S. and Canada East Coast/Pacific
Ocean southwest of Mexico...
The numerous large wildfires continued to burn especially in portions of
British Columbia, northern Alberta, and the southern part of the Northwest
Territories this morning. A large area of smoke mainly attributed to
these fires covers most of western/central and northeast Canada, across
the North Atlantic, and south into the Central US reaching east into
the Mississippi Valley. Another area smoke extends along the Mexico
coast into western Mexico and north along the coast and into southern
California. Another small area is seen off the Oregon and Washington
St coastline. An area of moderately dense to dense smoke extends across
northern British Columbia, northern/central Alberta/Saskatchewan, most of
Manitoba, south into the northern/central Plains and Mississippi Valley
and as far north as the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. An area of
moderately dense smoke is also seen in central sections of Greenland
and extending south and east across the North Atlantic. Cloud cover has
made it difficult to see some of the smoke across eastern Canada and
the North Atlantic.

DUST:
Atlantic Ocean…
Saharan dust was seen over west Africa/off the coast and east across
the Atlantic.
The heaviest smoke is just off the coast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
