DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0132Z September 29, 2023

SMOKE:
Central and Eastern Canada/Northern Plains/Northern CONUS/North
Atlantic/Greenland/Europe…
Wildfires across western Canada produced a large far-stretch area of
moderate smoke that extends from Hudson Bay eastward across the North
Atlantic and encroaching upon the European continent. Within this area,
a patch of thick density smoke was seen extending from southeast Canada
through the North Atlantic Ocean. It is likely more smoke is present
over Nunavut and the eastern Canadian Archipelago, but cloud cover is
obscured the area precluding further analysis in the region.

Eastern Pacific/Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Mississippi Valley/Southeastern
CONUS…
An area of light to moderate density smoke from agricultural burning
across the Mississippi Valley, southern Plains, and southeastern CONUS
over the past few days, was seen blanketing an area from the southern
Plains through Mississippi Valley and southward along the western Gulf of
Mexico. Within this region moderate smoke was seen over the Mississippi
Valley, where the heavy agricultural burning was located. Smoke then
crosses the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where some emissions from gas flaring
were observed and become incorporated into the layer before moving out
over the Pacific. Another layer of mixed smoke and other aerosol was
observed blanketing much of the Eastern Pacific. The exact sources of
this aerosol layer are uncertain.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
