DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z September 30, 2023

SMOKE:
Eastern Canada/Northern Plains/Northern CONUS/North
Atlantic/Greenland/Europe…
Heavy cloud cover and winds have greatly reduced the wildfires across
western Canada, however a large far-stretch area of light smoke were
still visible, extending from central eastern Canada across the Northern
Atlantic ocean and approaching the outskirts of Europe. Within this
area, patches of moderate density smoke was seen extending from Eastern
Canada and Maine east into the Atlantic ocean as well as North Atlantic
Ocean. The larger area of light density smoke may extend further north
and west into Canada, but heavy cloud cover prevented further analysis.

Mississippi Valley/Southeastern CONUS…
An area of light density smoke from agricultural burning across the
Mississippi Valley, southern Plains, and southeastern CONUS over
the past few days, was seen blanketing an area from the Great Plains
through Mississippi Valley and southward towards the outskirts of the
Gulf of Mexico. Within this region remnant moderate smoke was seen over
the Mississippi Valley, beginning from Illinois/Missouri then southward
through the Mississippi River and Valley, and encompassing all the states
bordering the river.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
