DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z October 25, 2023

SMOKE:
Mid-Atlantic…
An area of light-density remnant smoke was observed along the Mid-Atlantic
off the coast of the northeastern U.S and southeastern Canada. This smoke
is presumably the result of previous days’ agricultural burning across
the southeastern U.S. and Mississippi Valley.

Southeastern United States…
A number of fires, primarily associated with agricultural burning,
were observed to be producing a large area of light density smoke that
extended over western half of the southeastern U.S. Light density smoke
plumes were scattered across much of the southeastern U.S. from Louisiana
to Georgia. A wetlands fire near New Orleans was also producing a large
plume of generally light to moderate smoke moving northwestward across
the state.

Mexico…
An area of light-density remnant smoke, possibly mixed with aerosols,
was observed along much of the Gulf coast of Mexico and mixing in with
smoke from the agricultural burning in the southeastern U.S.

California…
A large area of thin density smoke was observed off of much of western
California and extending into the Pacific Ocean. Across the state,
wildfires were seen producing light density smoke plumes moving in
different directions.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
