DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z November 13, 2023

SMOKE:
Eastern U.S…
Fire activity throughout the eastern U.S was seen producing light
density smoke plumes. Smoke in Missouri and surrounding states were seen
moving northeast while the smoke further east in states such as Kentucky,
Virginia, and North Carolina were seen moving in all directions. There is
likely smoke further south in southeastern U.S but cloud cover prevented
further analysis.

Western U.S…
Fire activity Arizona and California were seen producing decent size
areas of smoke. Wildfires in eastern Arizona were seen producing a large
area of light to moderate density smoke extending westward. The numerous
wildfires in northern California were seen producing small light density
smoke plumes moving northward. These smoke plumes together formed a
small patch of light density smoke over north-central California.

Aerosols:
Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean off the Southern Coast of Mexico…
Areas of thin to locally moderate density aerosol, likely associated with
industrial activities in Mexico, could be seen over portions of southern
Mexico and some of the Pacific Ocean off the southern coast of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
