DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z January 13, 2023

SMOKE:
Florida/Atlantic…
Widespread seasonal fire activity was observed producing widespread smoke
across much of Florida. Smoke plumes were moving north then northeastward
as a cold front was approaching the area this afternoon. The smoke was
also extending offshore over the Atlantic Ocean.

Central Chihuahua…
An area of dense fire activity in central Chihuahua was observed producing
light to moderate smoke this afternoon. The smoke produced was observed
fanning out from the parent fire activity, favoring smoke moving toward
the northern semicircle.

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
U.S. Central and Western Gulf Coast Region/Northern and Western Gulf of
Mexico/Eastern and Southern Mexico/Northwestern Central America/Pacific
Ocean off the coast of Southern Mexico and Northwest Central America…
A large area of mixed smoke and aerosol was observed spanning and area
from the Gulf Coast to the Tropical Pacific. The thickest portions
of this aerosol layer were present over the coastal plain of eastern
Mexico, the western and central Gulf of Mexico, and the Bay of Campeche,
extending northeastward ahead of a cold front that was acting to focus the
aerosol just ahead of said front. A couple more moderately thick areas
of the layer were observed extending southward off the Mexican Pacific
coast. The portions of this aerosol layer were, and should continue to
be, shunted off toward the southeast.

DUST:
Texas…
Possible very thin dust was seen extending southeastward from the source
region in West Texas into central Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
