DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0136Z February 19, 2023

SMOKE:
Southeastern United States/Atlantic Ocean off the Southeast Coast...
Numerous light to moderate density smoke plumes, attributed primarily to
widespread seasonal burning, were observed throughout the southeastern
U.S. and the smoke plumes was generally  moving southeast as evening
approached.

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Northern and Western Gulf Coast States of the United States, Gulf of
Mexico, Cuba, Hispaniola,  Mexico, Northwestern Central America and the
Pacific Ocean Mexico and northwest Central America...
An area of smoke from seasonal fire activity occurring in portions of
Mexico, Central America, Cuba and the Southeastern United States along
with aerosols from industrial sources mainly in Cuba, Mexico, Hispaniola,
and Central America  was seen throughout the day extending from coastal
sections of the north central and western Gulf Coast States of the
United States extending southwest through the central and western Gulf
of Mexico, eastern and southern Mexico, northwestern Central America and
into the Pacific Ocean south and west of northwestern Central America
and southwestern Mexico. Areas of moderate smoke were noted in the
western Gulf of Mexico, Cuba and off the southern coast of Mexico into
the Pacific.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
