DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z January 8, 2024

SMOKE:
Cuba…
A couple areas of clustered fire activity in central and southern Cuba
was seen producing a few areas of light smoke. The smoke was mainly
moving off toward the west or west-southwest. There were also a couple
individual smoke-producing fires in northern Cuba that were moving off
toward the east-southeast.

BLOWING DUST:
Southwestern CONUS/Far Northwestern Mexico…
Scattered areas of blowing dust were observed being lofted from
southwestern portions of the Mojave Desert and northwestern portions of
the Sonoran Desert in southern California and just across the border into
Nevada and being transported southeastward across southern California,
southwestern Arizona, far northern Baja California, and far northwestern
Sonora.

Northern Chihuahua/southern New Mexico/West Texas…
Widespread blowing dust originating mainly in the deserts of northern
Chihuahua was observed being lofted this afternoon and being transported
east-northeastward into southern and central New Mexico and the West
Texas Panhandle, with perhaps the leading edge reaching the westernmost
portions of the North Texas Panhandle.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
