DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0022Z January 17, 2024

No significant areas of smoke or dust were detected over the region this
morning and early afternoon.

AEROSOL/SMOKE…
Mexico/Northwest Central America/Pacific Ocean south of southern coast
of Mexico and Central America…
An area of thin to mostly moderate density aerosol was noted over
northwestern Central America, a portion of the Pacific Ocean south of
Mexico, and southern Mexico. Fire activity has been detected in Mexico
northwest Central America, and heavy burning in northwest South America
is contributing to the moderate aerosol composed of pollutants from
industrial activities in the region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
