DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0051Z January 19, 2024

SMOKE:
No significant areas of smoke were detected today with heavy cloud over
most of our area of responsibility to include Canada, Mexico, and CONUS
(Continental United states).

AEROSOL/SMOKE…
Mexico/Northwest Central America/Pacific Ocean south of southern coast
of Mexico…
An area of light-density aerosol was noted over the Pacific Ocean off
the coast of southern Mexico. The plume is likely the product of urban
emissions along the southern Mexican coastline with some contribution from
scattered fire activity seen across southwestern Mexico and northwestern
Central America the last few days.

Blowing Dust:
Texas...
Moderate blowing dust could be seen originating from western Texas near
the New Mexico boarder. This dust was blowing southeast extending over
central Texas as evening approached.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
