DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z January 23, 2024
SMOKE: Southern Mexico… Light smoke was observed being emitted from scattered fire activity across southern Mexico. The smoke plumes were observed moving southward out over the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Bay of Campeche… Gas flaring activity in the Bay of Campeche was producing light smoke that was observed through breaks in cloud cover moving northwestward. Elsewhere… Widespread cloud cover was observed across nearly all of the CONUS east of the Rockies, the central portion of the Western CONUS, and northern Mexico. In some potions where cloud cover is present, there could be some light smoke present, especially across the southeastern CONUS and central Texas, where widespread fire activity was noted yesterday. Hosley THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
