DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z February 5, 2024

SMOKE:
Due to cloud cover no areas of significant smoke were visible through
satellite imagery today.

SMOKE/AEROSOL…
Mexico/Central America/Northwest Central America/Pacific Ocean/Caribbean
Sea:
An area of light to moderate aerosol from a composite of smoke from
agricultural burning, volcanic ash, gas flaring in the Bay of Campeche
and aerosol from industrial sources was observed blanketing an area from
south Texas through western Gulf of Mexico, into parts of eastern and
southern Mexico, over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern Mexico,
northwestern Central America and the western Caribbean Sea.

BLOWING DUST…
CONUS/Mexico Border Region…
Dust of varying density was observed being lofted from south-southeastern
Texas and being transported east-southeastward with the leading edge
of the largest plume reaching deep into the central Gulf of Mexico as
evening approached. A second much smaller plume of moderate blowing dust
was observed later in the afternoon moving southeast from southern Texas
into the western Gulf of Mexico.

East-central Mexico…
Areas of thick blowing dust were observed being lofted from the high
deserts east and northeast of Mexico City. The blowing dust was moving
southwest earlier towards the Pacific coast earlier today.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
