DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z February 5, 2024

SMOKE:
South Central United States….
An area of light density smoke was seen over portions of the South
Central United States from Oklahoma into northern Texas. The area of
smoke is likely from previous days fire activity over the Southeastern
United States.

Northeastern Mexico and the Western Gulf of Mexico….
A fire over northeastern Mexico was producing a large area of mostly light
density smoke that was extending southeast through much of the western
Gulf of Mexico. There is a small area of moderate density smoke that
was extending from the fire to near coastal regions of northeast Mexico.

SMOKE/AEROSOL…
Central America, Western Caribbean Sea and the Western Caribbean Islands:
An area of aerosol that is likely a combination of smoke from agricultural
burning, volcanic ash, gas flaring and aerosol from industrial sources was
observed over portions of Central America extending northeast through the
western Caribbean Sea and into portions of the western Caribbean Islands.

AEROSOL/DUST….
Gulf of Mexico….
An area of aerosol was seen over the central Gulf of Mexico and it
is believed that at least a portion of this is from blowing dust from
yesterday over the South Central United States.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
