DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0128Z February 13, 2024

SMOKE:
Texas...
Several fires from seasonal burning were observed in southern Texas
producing mostly light density smoke moving southeast off the Gulf coast.

Cuba...
About a handful of fires in southeastern Cuba were observed emitting
light to locally moderate density smoke this afternoon. The smoke was
moving toward the north or northwest.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Southern Gulf of Mexico/Pacific Ocean off Southern Mexico and Northern
Central America...
Light smoke was observed over the southern Gulf of Mexico due to gas
flaring activity in the Bay of Campeche. Another area of light density
aerosols was also seen over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern
Mexico and northwestern Central America as a result of coastal urban
pollution and smoke from seasonal fires in Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
