DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700 February 28, 2024

SMOKE:

Midwestern U.S./Floridian Panhandle/…
Seasonal burning in Northeastern Minnesota produced an area of light
density smoke that was moving generally Southeast over Lake Superior.
Further south, agricultural burning in the Floridian panhandle produced
light observable smoke over Lake Okeechobee, blowing in a Northeastern
trajectory.

Southern/Northern Cuba/Caribbean Sea/Gulf of Mexico ...
Light density smoke from recent rounds of seasonal burning throughout
southern Cuba was extending southwest into the Caribbean Sea. Additionally
seasonal burning in northern Cuba was releasing light density smoke
north onto
the Gulf of Mexico.

Southern Bay of Campeche...
An area of thin density smoke emanating from a number of oil rigs in
the Bay of Campeche was visible blowing towards the Northwest.

AEROSOL/SMOKE…
Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Central America/Northwest Central America/Pacific
Ocean south of Mexico…
An area of light to moderate density aerosol from a composite of smoke
due to agricultural burning and industrial sources was noted over the
western portion of the Gulf of Mexico and eastern/southern Mexico. An
area of light-density aerosol from a composite of smoke from agricultural
burning and industrial sources was noted over the Pacific Ocean off the
coast of southern Mexico and northwestern Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
