DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1450Z April 04, 2024

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Florida, Western Caribbean Islands,
Western Caribbean Sea, Eastern and Southern Mexico, Central America and
the Eastern Pacific Ocean...
A large area of light density smoke, from widespread seasonal fire
activity throughout central and southern Mexico, Central America,
northern South America and the western Caribbean Islands, was seen today
extending from the central North Atlantic Ocean west and southwest to
off the Southeast Coast of the United States, through Florida, the Gulf
of Mexico, western Caribbean Islands, western Caribbean Sea, southern
and eastern Mexico, Central America and into the eastern Pacific Ocean.
Within this large area light density smoke, an area of moderate density
smoke was seen over much of Central America, southern Mexico and the
western Caribbean Sea. Over portions of the western Caribbean Sea,
Mexico, Central America, the southern Gulf of Mexico and the eastern
Pacific Ocean, the light to moderate density smoke was also combining
with aerosols from volcanic ash emissions and industrial sources in
Mexico and gas flaring activity in the Gulf of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
