DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z April 11, 2024

SMOKE:
South Florida…
A fire in southwestern Florida was observed producing a smoke plume
moving north and east over southern Florida and Lake Okeechobee.

Elsewhere in the U.S….
While significant seasonal fire activity was detected in and around Iowa
and adjacent states, cumulus cloud development through the afternoon
precluded observation of any notable smoke plumes.

Cuba…
Significant seasonal fire activity was contributing to a mass of light
smoke over much of the island and adjacent waters to the north.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central-Southern Mexico/Central America/Yucatan Peninsula/Gulf of
Mexico/Caribbean Sea/Pacific Ocean...
Continued widespread seasonal burning activity across central and southern
Mexico and Central America was contributing to a large mass of smoke and
aerosols across these regions, as well as much of the Gulf of Mexico,
the western Caribbean Sea, and adjacent waters of the Pacific Ocean
south of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
