DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z June 6, 2024
SMOKE: Canada/North-Central United States... Fires in northeastern Ontario and northern Quebec were observed producing localized smoke plumes of up to heavy density. Remnant smoke from these and other fires was observed over much of Quebec, as well as portions of eastern Hudson Bay. Fires in southern Alberta were also producing smoke plumes that extended southeastward over portions of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Western United States… A number of widely scattered wildfires were observed producing smoke at locations throughout the western U.S. Notable fires with smoke plumes were located in central Colorado, southwestern Utah, the California/Arizona border, east-central California, central Montana, and southwestern Idaho near the Oregon border. These fires were producing plumes of smoke of mainly moderate density, with a few producing heavy-density smoke. AEROSOL/SMOKE: Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Central America/Central and Southeastern United States/Pacific Ocean... Numerous smoke plumes related to agricultural burning were observed across much of Mexico and adjacent Central America. This smoke combined with a large amount of remnant smoke, as well as aerosols from a variety of sources, to create a large mass of light to moderate density smoke covering much of Mexico, northern Central America, south-central and southeastern United States, the Gulf of Mexico, and adjacent coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean. MTC THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
