DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500 June 8, 2024
SMOKE: Eastern coast of United States… Agricultural fires in the eastern US were observed producing light density smoke plumes moving south-southwest from Florida to North Carolina. Quebec, Canada… A few clusters of fires were seen in central Quebec emitting moderate to thick density smoke that was moving northwest in direction. There was also remnant smoke in this area that continued moving NW over the Hudson Bay and across northern Canada. Yukon... Three fires in southwestern Yukon were observed releasing light to moderate density smoke that was moving generally west. AEROSOL/SMOKE: Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Central America/Central United States/U.S. Gulf States/Pacific Ocean... Numerous smoke plumes related to agricultural burning were observed across much of Mexico and adjacent Central America. This smoke combined with a large amount of remnant smoke, as well as aerosols from a variety of sources, to create a large mass of light to moderate density smoke covering much of Mexico, northern Central America, south-central U.S., the Gulf states, the Gulf of Mexico, over the Atlantic Ocean, and adjacent coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean. Rodriguez THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
