DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY

SMOKE:
Canada/United States/Mexico/Pacific Ocean...
A large area of mixed density smoke attributed to numerous wildfires
throughout northern Canada, Washington State, Oregon and northern
California from eastern Canada continues to be seen today. This area of
mixed density smoke was seen extending south from central Alaska along
the Pacific Coast, extending further west into the Pacific and reaching
as far south as central Mexico. This mixed density smoke was also seen
extending east from central Alaska to the eastern border of Ontario
with areas of moderate density smoke extending south from Saskatchewan
and Manitoba across the Canada-U.S. Border and into the South Central
region of the United States. Thick density smoke was seen along the
shared northern borders of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and
southern border of the Northwest Territories. Areas of lighter density
remnant smoke attributed to seasonal fire activity within the U.S. and
the numerous amount of wildfires throughout northern Canada was also
observed this morning extending northeast from the western portion of
the Gulf of Mexico and through the entirety of the Atlantic Seaboard
before extending further northeast into the Northern Atlantic Ocean and
the southern region of Greenland.

DUST:
A moderate amount of Saharan dust was observed this morning over the
Atlantic Ocean and the eastern Caribbean Sea with higher density dust
observed closer to the central Atlantic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
