DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 8, 2024
SMOKE: Canada/North Central and Southeastern United States/Atlantic Ocean... Smoke of varying density was observed over an expansive area stretching from Alaska and the Arctic to Central California, Baffin Island, the Great Lakes, and the North Atlantic. Active smoke emissions were observed emanating from wildfires across Yukon, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and the West Coast with the thickest emissions emanating from Northwest Territory. The thick smoke exists over Northwest Territory and Nunavut, with smoke of moderate density observed from the Tri-Province region northward then both westward over Alaska and eastward across Northwest Territory and Nunavut. Moderate density smoke was also seen over portions of Quebec. Smoke emissions from central Saskatchewan were seen moving south-southwest. Gulf of Mexico and surrounding areas… Light remnant smoke was seen over portions of the Southeastern CONUS, Mexican Gulf Coastal Plain, the Gulf of Mexico, and portions of the NW Caribbean. The likely source of this smoke is likely agricultural burning across the central and southern Plains and southeastern CONUS. The smoke from agricultural burning was seen initiating across the south-central to southeastern CONUS moving off toward the east-southeast to southeast. DUST: A moderate amount of Saharan Dust was seen traveling westward across the Atlantic Ocean just about as far west as the Lesser Antilles to east-southeast of Bermuda. The leading edge continues to move westward to west-northwestward approaching Bermuda and the Virgin Islands Hosley THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
