DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0120Z August 27, 2024

SMOKE:
Canada/United States/Atlantic Ocean...
An exceptionally large area of smoke attributed to a combination of
the large amount of wildfire activity across western Canada and the
Northwest region of the United States, and seasonal burning throughout
the Southeastern United States, continues to impact significant
portions of Canada, the United States and parts of the northern Atlantic
Ocean. Several relatively small areas of moderate to thick density smoke
were seen emanating from wildfires located in central Saskatchewan, Idaho,
north-central Ontario, and southwestern Quebec. Remnant moderate density
smoke was also observed over the Labrador Sea. Light density smoke was
seen blanketing most of Canada, south through the Mississippi Valley and
continued to the Coastal Atlantic region of the United States. Cloud cover
throughout the majority of Canada prevented a more detailed analysis of
smoke density today. However, based on past observations it is likely
that medium-to-heavy density smoke is present close to active fires in
the areas previously mentioned but is concealed by cloud cover.

DUST:
A moderate amount of Saharan Dust was seen traveling westward across
the Atlantic Ocean towards the Lesser Antilles.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
