DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z August 29, 2024

SMOKE:
Canada/United States/Atlantic Ocean...
A large area of smoke attributed to a combination of the large amount
of wildfire activity across western and central Canada, and the
Northwest region of the United States, continued to impact areas of
Canada, the United States, and portions of the Atlantic Ocean. Large
wildfires concentrated in Idaho were observed producing moderate to
potentially thick density smoke that was observed extending eastward and
contributing to overall large area of smoke observed over the U.S. Cloud
cover precluded observation for smoke over central and western Canada,
where majority of the wildfires are concentrated.

DUST:
A moderate amount of Saharan Dust was seen traveling westward across
the Atlantic Ocean coast towards the Lesser Antilles.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
