DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z September 21, 2024

SMOKE:
Canada/United States/Atlantic Ocean...
A layer of light density smoke attributed to a combination of seasonal
burning throughout the United States and wildfire activity across
northwestern Canada continues to be seen this evening. This large area
of smoke was observed extending east over the Hudson Bay, Quebec and
the Northeastern United States, before extending further east across
the Labrador Sea and into the northern Atlantic Ocean. Seasonal burning
throughout the Southeastern United States continued throughout the
day, resulting in a layer of light-to-moderate density smoke that was
seen dispersing throughout the eastern United States as the evening
progressed. Heavy cloud cover over Canada  continued through the evening,
preventing further observations for this evening’s smoke analysis.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
