DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1655Z October 17, 2024

SMOKE:
Central Canada/Midwest/Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Mid-Atlantic Coast...
A layer of mixed density smoke was observed this morning, moderate density
smoke dispersed northeast from eastern Wyoming into Manitoba and Ontario,
while lighter density smoke was seen extending southward through the
Midwest and Great Plains states, through Texas and into the northeast
coastal region of Mexico. As the smoke continued blowing eastward into
the southern portion of the Gulf of Mexico, it continued northeast towards
Florida before extending into the Atlantic Ocean off the Mid-Atlantic
Coast. Several light-to-moderate density plumes attributed to seasonal
agricultural burning throughout the Southeastern United State were
observed blowing generally southwestward towards the Gulf, resulting
in a very light layer of remnant smoke throughout the region. Light
density remnant smoke was present throughout the Western and Central
United States as a result of the ongoing wildfire activity throughout
Idaho, western Montana and northern Wyoming, however, cloud cover over
the respective states obscured visibility for today’s smoke analysis.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
