Subject: Administrative, Planned Leap Second Activities and Special --20cf30334ecb27aa6c04c38b8535 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Topic: Planned Leap Second Activities and Special GOES Spacecraft Operations Are Scheduled on June 30, 2012 Date/Time Issued: June 28, 2012, 1720 UTC Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-13 (GOES-East) Imaging and Sounding Navigation Date/Time of Initial Impact: June 30, 2012 at 2345 UTC Date/Time of Expected End: July 1, 2012 at 0046 UTC Length of Impact: See table in details. Details/Specifics of Impact: A leap second is a one-second adjustment that is occasionally applied to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in order to keep its time of day close to the mean solar time. UTC and all time scales based on UTC will be affected by this adjustment. At the end of day on June 30, 2012 (DOY 182/183 transition) a positive leap second will be introduced into the UTC time system. Special operations are required for the GOES N-P spacecraft surrounding the extra second. A small (less than a 5km shift) imaging and sounding navigation error is expected only on GOES-13 (GOES-East). There is no expected error on GOES-15 (GOES-West). GOES-13 (GOES-East) 23:59:60 UTC - leap second applied 23:45 UTC - Full Disk image (small data shift in the second half of the image) 23:46 UTC - CONUS Sounding (small data shift in the second half of the sounding) 00:15 UTC - Northern Hemisphere image (image returned to normal) 00:46 UTC - CONUS Sounding (sounding returned to normal) GOES-15 (GOES-West) 23:59:60 UTC - leap second applied 00:00 UTC - Full Disk Image (no error expected) 00:02 UTC - CONUS Sounding (no error expected) There is no special operation required for GOES-12 (GOES-South America), therefore there is no expected error on its imaging and sounding.
