Subject: Administrative: Update #1 - NOAA-17 Data Transmission Change --14dae9ccd61c19425f04cdc2fca1 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Update #1: The Initial Impact Time has been changed from November 6, 2012 at 0000 UTC to November 6, 2012 at 0250 UTC. All other details of this notification remain the same. Topic: NOAA-17 Data Transmission Change Date/Time Issued: November 5, 2012 1740 UTC Product(s) or Data Impacted: NOAA-17 GAC Data & NOAA-17 HRPT Data Date/Time of Initial Impact: November 6, 2012 0250 UTC Date/Time of Expected End: This configuration change is effective until further notice. Length of Outage: N/A Details/Specifics of Change: Due to the loss of S-Band Transmitter #1 (STX1) on NOAA-17, a new data transmission configuration is being promoted. The new configuration will move HRPT broadcast from STX1 to STX2 (1702.5MHz) in order to allow for the continued collection of spacecraft health and safety information. The new configuration also includes a schedule change that will impact the transmission of NOAA-17 GAC (Global Area Coverage) data and prevent the recovery of all GACs. Whereas GAC was previously dumped from two transmitters, it will now be dumped by only one transmitter. Typically, 2-3 GAC dumps occur during each of 6-8 passes per day. The same is true going forward, but with the restriction of delivering those dumps with only one available transmitter there may be a reduced number of GACs recovered. Here is the current transmitter status: STX1 L-Band Transmitter #1 (1698MHz) Status is Orange STX2 L-Band Transmitter #2 (1702.5MHz) Status is Green STX3 L-Band Transmitter #3 (1707MHz) Status is Red STX4 S-Band Transmitter #4 (2247.5MHz) Status is Green Impact to Products: The benefit of this configuration change is that it allows for continued nominal transmission of HRPT data for the Argos Data Collection System. Only products that rely on NOAA-17 GAC data will be negatively impacted. The impact to Blended Total Precipitable Water (bTPW) will be a twice per day, 80 minute degradation of the refresh rate. Ozone products will also see an impact due to the lack of NOAA-17 GAC data.
