The improved GOES sounder retrieval algorithm (Li algorithm) will be made operational on February 25, 2013, at 1500 UTC. This operational implementation also includes the system hardware upgrade to the VMWare that will reduce the level-1 product (BUFR soundings) latency from 25 minutes to 7 minutes and level-2 (DPI) product latency from 25 minutes to 20 minutes to meet user requirements. The NESDIS GOES Sounder SFOV application will provide the following DPI products on AWIPS, every hour in the Super National Scale: - Cloud Top Pressure WMO Header - TIGN27 - Effective Cloud Amount WMO Header - TIGN28 - Lifted Index WMO Header - TIGN16 - Preciptiable Water WMO Header - TIGN17 - Skin Temperature WMO Header - TIGN18. The WMO Headers for the sounder BUFR files on AWIPS are: JUTXii KNES YYGGgg, where "ii" is AWIPS BUFR regions 01 to 10. Update: The Operational Implementation has been postpone until Thursday February 28, 2013 due to the (CWD) Critical Weather Day.

Topic: Operational Implementation of Improved GOES Sounding DPI and BUFR Sounding Products in AWIPS

Date/Time Issued: February 25, 2013  1525 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES Sounder Single Field Of View (SFOV) DPI and BUFR Sounding Products in AWIPS

Satellite(s) Involved:   GOES-East and GOES-West

Instrument (s) Involved:   Sounder

Date/Time of Initial Impact:   February 25, 2013  1500 UTC

Impacts on Users and Significance:  Operational capability for enhanced sounding products from GOES-East and GOES-West satellites

Details/Specifics of Change:  NOAA/NESDIS plans to replace the current operational physical retrieval algorithm (Ma et al., 1999) with a new physical retrieval algorithm (Li et al., 2008). The NESDIS GOES Sounder SFOV application will provide the following DPI products on AWIPS, every hour in the Super National Scale:

- Cloud Top Pressure            WMO Header - TIGN27
- Effective Cloud Amount      WMO Header - TIGN28
- Lifted Index                           WMO Header - TIGN16
- Preciptiable Water              WMO Header - TIGN17
- Skin Temperature                WMO Header - TIGN18.

The WMO Headers for the sounder BUFR files on AWIPS are:  JUTXii KNES YYGGgg, where "ii" is AWIPS BUFR regions 01 to 10.
