DATALOC ADD MOD  140.90.213.191  <to access data from test system, satepsdistb5e
DATALOC ADD MOD  140.90.213.160  <to access current  operational data
For users who want to process operational and test versions of the data within the same session, the data are also served under group name MODB on both servers.

For standard atmospheric parameters – U, V, P, T, RH, Z etc – the difference between data from the operational and test servers, if any, is expected to be insignificant.   For certain surface parameters however the parameter names, levels, or units for levels may be altered by the new processing, for example:

Precipitable water - name/level/units
Ops:  PWAT/EATM/EATM   Test: PWAT/TRO/RSRV
Latent heat flux - name/level/units
Ops: LHF/SFC /SFC            Test: LHET/SFC/

We are available to assist as necessary.

Upcoming Change to NCEP Model Data Distribution by ESPC

Date/Time Issued:  November 19, 2013   2030 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted:  NCEP Model Data distributed by the Data Distribution Server (DDS) and SATEPDIST5e (McIDAS format)

Date/Time of Initial Impact:   December 10, 2013 1200 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End:  N/A

Length of Outage:  Permanent Change

Details/Specifics of Change:

NCEP is in the process of decommissioning GRIB1 datasets.  As a result, there are upcoming changes to the NCEP model data that ESPC distributes.  This will be happening in two phases:  Dec 10, 2013, and Jan 7, 2014.

On Dec 10:
1.  NCEP will stop sending GRIB1 data to the DDS.  These are the file patterns that will be affected:  gdas1.tCCz.pgrbf?? and gfs.tCCz.pgrf??.  GRIB2 version of these files are available.  Please contact the DDS Administrator if you are not yet receiving the replacement products you need.
2.  ESPC will also decommission the following McIDAS model groups that are either no longer needed by NESDIS operations, or are no longer being updated:  MOD/AWIP, MOD/EDAS, MOD/GESG, MOD/ECG, MOD/NGM, MOD/RUC, MOD/MRFG.

On Jan 7, the following McIDAS groups will become populated with data converted from GRIB2 instead of GRIB1:  MOD/GFS, MOD/UKGL, MOD/NAM.  Test data will be made available on Tue Nov 19, 2013 and will be announced by a separate notification.
