To assist users in the transition to the new satellite, JMA will operate MTSAT-2 in parallel with H-8 until 0630 UTC, December 4, 2015. NESDIS will provide current MTSAT products to users until December 4, 2015. To mitigate the coverage gap for current users of MTSAT-2 data, NESDIS is working to replace MTSAT-2 imagery with sub-sampled H-8 data in McIDAS format. Hence, the sub-sampled H-8 data will reflect the MTSAT-2 specifications of the five channels having a spatial resolution of 4 km in the IR, and 1 km in the Visible. When the transition is completed in early December 2015 (goal is before December 4 for overlap period), NESDIS will make the H-8 imagery McIDAS Area Files available from its GEODIST system. McIDAS users please note that processing of H-8 data can only be performed with the installation of the latest MCIDAS-X update, version 2015.1 available from SSEC. Following are the replacement McIDAS file names that will be used for users transitioning from MTSAT-2 operations to H-8 operations for imagery: _Current MTSAT-2_ _New Himawari-8_ MTS/MTGLOB01V = HIM/HMGLOB03V MTS/MTGLOB04I2 = HIM/HMGLOB04I13 MTS/MTGLOB04I3 = HIM/HMGLOB04I15 MTS/MTGLOB04I4 = HIM/HMGLOB04I8 MTS/MTGLOB04I5 = HIM/HMGLOB04I7 -------------------------------------------------------------- MTS/MTNHEM01V = HIM/HMNHEM03V MTS/MTNHEM04I2 = HIM/HMNHEM04I13 MTS/MTNHEM04I3 = HIM/HMNHEM04I15 MTS/MTNHEM04I4 = HIM/HMNHEM04I8 MTS/MTNHEM04I5 = HIM/HMNHEM04I7 ------------------------------------------------------------ MTS/MTSHEM01V = HIM/HMSHEM03V MTS/MTSHEM04I2 = HIM/HMSHEM04I13 MTS/MTSHEM04I3 = HIM/HMSHEM04I15 MTS/MTSHEM04I4 = HIM/HMSHEM04I8 MTS/MTSHEM04I5 = HIM/HMSHEM04I7 Once these equivalent H-8 imagery datasets are routinely produced, NESDIS will assess and test the other MTSAT-2 Level 2 products using H-8 data in McIDAS, as well as blended and merged products that currently have MTSAT-2 data incorporated in them.
